You’ll find me at: 5:30am
Victoria Pollard spent years fascinated by a friend’s passion for CrossFit. But it took a chance meeting with one of Downstate CrossFit’s owners to convince her to give it a shot. “I felt like it was a sign,” she said. “It still took me a few months before I got up the nerve to walk in and sign up for Elements, but I’ve been obsessed ever since.”
Victoria, who works for iHeartMedia and has an 11 year old and 6 year old, spends plenty of time shuttling her active kids to practices and games. She squeezes everything in by being a devotee of the 5:30 a.m. class.
“I am pretty sure my husband is sick of hearing me talk about CrossFit but my kids think it’s cool,” she said. “I think it’s important that my kids see me committed to something I love that is healthy and that makes me feel good.”
What was your lifestyle like before you joined DSCF?
As a kid and through high school I was a three-season athlete. As an adult I went in phases with exercise. Before CrossFit I was a Saw Mill member–going every day and sweating a bit, usually spin, but I never felt like I was getting stronger or better.
I am generally a healthy eater but I have a big appetite–it’s the Italian in me! Seeing the changes in my body from CrossFit makes me more conscious about what I put in my mouth and causes me to think about what else I can be doing to be healthier.
What do you think is different about DSCF?
Nothing has ever kept me this captivated. I imagine it’s the combination of pushing myself out of my comfort zone, plus the competitive element, plus the accountability of outperforming myself that keeps me coming back.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I have an old yellow 1971 pickup truck–we call it Banana Split.
Fill in the blank. If I see ______ in the workout, I contemplate going back to bed. Thrusters! I didn’t even have to think about it.
Seriously though, you’re clearly committed to the 5:30 a.m. class. It’s sooo early. What’s your secret?
You can’t hit snooze! I just know that if I don’t go to 5:30, I won’t be going. It’s my only choice!
