As a field service tech, Anthony spends lots of time on the road and outside. Good for soaking up the sun, not so great if you’re looking to eat healthy foods. “I ate four or five times a day — Wendy’s, Burger King and diners — I didn’t cook too much at home at the time,” Anthony said of his former lifestyle. Then, two years ago he joined Downstate CrossFit and things gradually changed. He eventually went from a size 44 pant to a size 38. “I went to the gym twice a day in the first year. … And now, I meal prep all of my foods. I refuse to go back to the way I was.”
How did you discover CrossFit?
A friend I was seeing suggested I should try CrossFit, so I did a search online and found two boxes. I went to the first and one and didn’t get a good vibe. Then, I went to DSCF and met the coaches. … I just wanted to know that there were going to work with me, and that I wasn’t throwing myself into something I couldn’t handle. I felt comfortable around them. They knew what they were doing.
What has been the most challenging thing about CrossFit?
Getting used to being uncomfortable.
What was your first CrossFit competition like?
It was amazing. Everybody yelling at you, telling you, “Let’s go. You can do it. One rep at time.” That was when I got hooked. I had so much fun being exhausted and watching everybody push each other. Everyone should try it once or twice.
What’s something folks at the gym don’t know about you?
I like to read comics and draw whenever I get the chance. I’m not that good at it, but it’s always been a passion of mine.
Any New Year’s resolutions?
Stay the course and never go back to being that guy who walked through that door two years ago.
